Because most VW oil pans have only a few inches of ground clearance, these are a good idea at stock height and a necessity for lowered cars. I put one of these on my A4 B5 Quattro a few years ago. This spring I ran over a chunk of concrete at 70mph and just about ripped my exhaust off the car. The skid plate now has a nice crease in it and my transmission cross mount was gone. The most important thing was that the engine and transmission were intact and the frame was unaffected. I have since replaced the exhaust and the cross mount but this saved my car. I would have punctured the engine pan and the transmission as well as possibly bending the frame.
This is a great product and cheap insurance on the car.
